115kV Wooden Cross Arm Replacement

High voltage transmission lines with wooden arms that were approaching the end of their life needed to be replaced with steel arms. Air2 provided the customer with a solution by engineering arms in sections that could be long-lined into place using the MD 500 helicopter.

In this video, the helicopter flies the linemen, tools and hardware to the structures. This expedites the job sequencing. The linemen disassembled the old cross arm, which the helicopter lifts out of its place. The linemen prepare the structure for the new steel arm. The new steel arm is long-lined into place by the MD 500 helicopter.

Cross arm replacement by helicopter is quicker and more environmentally friendly than traditional bucket truck methods. There is minimal environmental impact, right of way intrusion or matting required. Air2 developed safe work procedures to install the new arms.
